I’ve had the pleasure of visiting Keukenhof several times, and it’s worth returning again and again because each year offers a new sight. Depending on the spring weather, you’ll encounter different blooms and a changing landscape, making every visit a unique experience.
Keukenhof is located in Lisse, in the beautiful Netherlands. If you’re traveling from the United States, you can easily reach Keukenhof by flying into Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. From the airport, there are convenient train and bus connections that will take you to Keukenhof in under an hour. It’s a hassle-free journey that allows you to immerse yourself in the beauty of Keukenhof upon arrival.
The History of the Keukenhof Kingdom
The history of Keukenhof dates back to the 15th century. Countess Jacoba van Beieren (Jacqueline of Bavaria) used ‘Keukenduyn’ (kitchen dunes) as a hunting ground for the kitchen of Teylingen Castle. Keukenhof Castle was built in 1641, and the estate expanded to cover over 200 hectares.
Landscape architects Jan David Zocher and his son Louis Paul Zocher, who also designed Amsterdam’s Vondelpark, redesigned the castle gardens in 1857. This park, in the English landscape style, still forms the foundation of Keukenhof.
In 1949, a group of 20 leading flower bulb growers and exporters developed a plan to use the space to exhibit spring-flowering bulbs, marking the birth of Keukenhof as a spring park. The park opened its doors to the public in 1950 and was an instant success, with 236,000 visitors in the first year alone. 2024 will mark the 75th edition of Keukenhof, and over the past 74 years, it has evolved into a world-famous attraction.
The aesthetic Keukenhof
Keukenhof will open its gates on 21 March 2024 and welcome visitors until 12 May. In this enchanting park, every blooming tulip, daffodil, and snowdrop is a work of art, greeting visitors as they stroll through its 32-hectare expanse. Over 7 million spring-flowering bulbs create a breathtaking sight, showcasing the vibrant colors and unique shapes of more than 800 tulip varieties.
What Sets Keukenhof Apart
Keukenhof is not just a feast for the eyes, but it’s also the international and independent showcase for the Dutch floricultural sector, with a special emphasis on flower bulbs. In the space of eight weeks, Keukenhof displays the best that the Dutch floricultural sector has to offer. The park’s main focus is on the 7 million spring-flowering bulbs, allowing 100 participating companies to showcase their living catalog. Moreover, more than 500 flower growers present an extensive array of cut flowers and potted plants at over 20 flower shows.
This unique blend makes Keukenhof an excellent networking opportunity and a place to meet business contacts. Trade events for growers are also regularly organized here, and Keukenhof maintains strong connections with all the relevant organizations in the floricultural and tourist sectors.
In Keukenhof, 100 flower bulb companies and growers (exhibitors) display their very best range of spring-flowering bulbs. Our garden designer creates a special design for each of these companies.
